eFour provided Modena / Italy based architecture and multimedia design studio FUSE*ARCHITECTURE with various custom designed LED fixtures that have been integrated into Unipol's multimedia artistic space CUBO in Bologna, in honour of their 50th anniversary.
Technology and new media are taking ever more pervasive roles in our lives, modifying the forms of communication and the places in which we live, work and spend our free time. In architecture, the digital avant-garde is opening up new fields of exploration and different ways of conceiving, planning and creating.
CUBO is a multimedia artistic space, designed and created to house the collective memories of Unipol, celebrating their 50th anniversary.
The CUBO media-architectural project was designed with the aim of creating an environment that is constantly in communication with the people experiencing it, as well as with the rest of the city and ultimately - the world.
Integrated eFour Technology:
The light installation comprised of 41 LED bars. They are located in the two gardens of the building and are the most technologically complex element of the CUBO project. Every column consists of a matrix of 3.072 high-luminosity RGB LED lights, controlled individually from the server room through 2,75 km of optical fibre. The columns are designed and engineered for uninterrupted use 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. An internal cooling system guarantees a constant temperature as air is funneled across the front layer of glazing in order to avoid condensation.
Nine custom designed and built video controlled LED "connected columns" placed in CUBO's mediatheque and two-layer diffusers are edge-lighting the opposite corners of these columns. The content displayed on these corners is provided by a centrally located video processing system.
